Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of many clients, there are multiple methods to whiten teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth whitening system that will whiten teeth considerably. Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the recently bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize a number of techniques: custom made tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.
The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory fabricates into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire process takes about a week of everyday use. Three various strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the higher the strength, the higher the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is advised for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take multiple months of use to see significant color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a very quick and practical whitening process. The visit is roughly one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our patients like this treatment because it is so simple and fast!
Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays must be utilized every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
