Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of many clients, there are multiple methods to lighten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth lightening system that will whiten teeth considerably. Since tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is necessary to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Most dentists use a number of methods: custom made tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.
The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory makes into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole procedure takes about a week of day-to-day use. 3 different strengths of gel may be used, however, the higher the strength, the higher the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is suggested for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take numerous months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a really fast and convenient lightening procedure. The visit is around one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients enjoy this treatment due to the fact that it is so simple and fast!
Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays must be used every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
