Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of a lot of clients, there are a number of methods to whiten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth lightening system that will bleach teeth considerably. Because tooth bleaching only works on natural tooth enamel, it is essential to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Most dentists use multiple approaches: customizeded tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory fabricates into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of daily use. 3 various strengths of gel may be used, however, the greater the strength, the greater the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is advised for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take a number of months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a very fast and convenient whitening procedure. The visit is roughly one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients love this treatment since it is so easy and fast!
Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays must be used every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
