Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of many patients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth bleaching system that will whiten teeth dramatically. Because tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is essential to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.
Most dentists use a number of techniques: custom made tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.
The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the lab produces into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of day-to-day use. 3 various strengths of gel may be used, however, the greater the strength, the greater the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is advised for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take multiple months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a extremely fast and convenient bleaching procedure. The visit is approximately one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our patients like this treatment because it is so easy and fast!
Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays need to be used every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
