Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of a lot of patients, there are a number of methods to lighten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth bleaching system that will whiten teeth dramatically. Since tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize multiple techniques: custom made tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory makes into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of day-to-day use. Three different strengths of gel may be used, however, the higher the strength, the greater the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is recommended for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take multiple months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a very fast and practical bleaching process. The visit is approximately one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our patients enjoy this treatment since it is so easy and quick!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays need to be utilized every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
