Today Were Talking About:

Endodontic Treatment (Root Canal)

Root canal treatment (also described as root canal therapy or endodontic therapy) is necessary when a cavity is allowed, through neglect, to reach all the way to the root pulp. (Regular cleanings and checkups prevent and identify problems early). Often deep restorations or trauma to a tooth may also trigger the nerve to be harmed to the point it requires root canal therapy. When this occurs, the pulp ends up being infected, and can even extend through the root tip and begin to eat away at the surrounding bone (this is an abscess).

By the time the pulp is infected it needs to be treated, and can not recover on its own. It can even weaken the whole immune system. This is dangerous, and may be extremely agonizing. Symptoms that the pulp has actually become infected might consist of sensitivity to hot/cold or sweets, discomfort, swelling, pain to biting or pressure, and a bad taste in the mouth. In some cases, however, no signs appear and the individual is unaware of any problem up until a checkup.

A root canal is then carried out to clear out the infected tooth pulp, and disinfect the canals of the tooth. The only other treatment would be to extract the tooth. When the infection is fixed, the canal(s) are filled in to prevent any additional infection. Usually a core build-up and crown is suggested for restoring a tooth that has had root canal therapy.
