Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of a lot of clients, there are a number of ways to lighten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth whitening system that will lighten teeth considerably. Because tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize multiple approaches: custom made tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.
The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory fabricates into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire process takes about a week of everyday use. 3 different strengths of gel might be used, however, the higher the strength, the greater the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is suggested for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take multiple months of use to see significant color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a extremely fast and hassle-free bleaching procedure. The visit is around one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients like this treatment since it is so easy and fast!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up might be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays need to be utilized every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
