Dental Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that covers the entire tooth surface restoring it to its initial shape and size. A crown protects and reinforces the tooth structure providing the tooth a longer life span than it would have if restored by fillings or other kinds of restorations.

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are utilized to cover a tooth that is most likely to break, or is too broken down to be brought back with a filling. They are most typically done after root canal treatments, or when a big filling wears out. The bigger the hole made by a cavity that needs to be treated, the more likely a crown will be required. Even after a filling is put in a big cavity, a tooth is more likely to break. Keep in mind that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the body. Teeth undergo tremendous pressures. Crowns ride over the weakened tooth, offering strength and securing the tooth against breakage. A damaged or cracked tooth is a much more serious matter and much more difficult to treat. Crowns prevent this, in addition to producing a nice smile.

It takes two visits to recover a tooth with a crown. In the first appointment any decay is eliminated from the tooth and it is formed to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in producing a crown. In between the two visits the crown is made, usually of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic product, or gold. A temporary crown is worn during this time. In the second visit this temporary crown is removed. Then the {permanent crown is adjusted as needed and then cemented in place.

What Does Getting A Crown Involve?

A crown treatment typically requires 2 appointments. Your very first appointment will consist of taking impressions that will be utilized to produce your custom-made crown. A mold will also be used to produce a temporary crown which will stay on your tooth for around two weeks up until your brand-new crown is made by a dental laboratory.

While the tooth is numb, the dental practitioner will prepare the tooth by eliminating any decay and forming the surface area to correctly fit the crown. As soon as these details are achieved, your short-term crown will be positioned with temporary cement and your bite will be inspected to guarantee you are biting properly.

At your second visit your short-term crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your brand-new crown will be thoroughly positioned to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

You will be given care guidelines and encouraged to have regular dental check ups to check your crown. As always, appropriate oral hygiene will help extend the life of your brand-new crown.
