Today's Topic Is About:

Dental Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that covers the entire tooth surface area restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens the tooth structure giving the tooth a longer life span than it would have if restored by fillings or other kinds of restorations.

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are used to cover a tooth that is likely to break, or is too broken down to be recovered with a filling. They are most commonly done after root canal treatments, or when a huge filling wears out. The larger the hole made by a cavity that needs to be treated, the more likely a crown will be required. Even after a filling is put in a large cavity, a tooth is more likely to break. Keep in mind that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the human body. Teeth go through tremendous pressures. Crowns ride over the weakened tooth, providing strength and securing the tooth against damage. A damaged or split tooth is a far more severe matter and a lot more tough to treat. Crowns prevent this, as well as making for a nice smile.

It takes 2 visits to restore a tooth with a crown. In the very first visit any decay is eliminated from the tooth and it is formed to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in fabricating a crown. In between the two visits the crown is made, usually of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic product, or gold. A temporary crown is used throughout this time. In the 2nd visit this temporary crown is removed. Then the {permanent crown is adjusted as needed and after that cemented in place.

What Does Getting A Crown Include?

A crown treatment typically needs 2 visits. Your very first appointment will include taking impressions that will be used to create your custom-made crown. A mold will also be utilized to develop a short-term crown which will remain on your tooth for roughly 2 weeks up until your new crown is made by a dental lab.

While the tooth is numb, the dental practitioner will prepare the tooth by eliminating any decay and shaping the surface to correctly fit the crown. As soon as these details are accomplished, your short-term crown will be positioned with temporary cement and your bite will be examined to ensure you are biting appropriately.

At your second appointment your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be thoroughly placed to guarantee the spacing and bite are precise.

You will be given care guidelines and encouraged to have regular dental visits to check your crown. As always, appropriate oral hygiene will help extend the life of your brand-new crown.
