What Are Same Day Crowns?

Same day crowns are a new innovation that a dental professional can financially restore damaged teeth in a single consultation using a premium ceramic material that matches the natural color of other teeth.

How Does It Work?

Same day crowns use a CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology, incorporating a camera, computer and a milling machine in one instrument. The dentist uses a special camera to take an precise picture of the damaged tooth. This optical impression is downloaded and displayed on a color computer screen, where the dental practitioner uses CAD technology to design the restoration. Then CAM takes over and immediately produces the restoration while the patient waits. Finally, the dental practitioner bonds the new restoration to the surface of the old tooth. The entire process takes about one hour.

What Does This Technology Mean For A Client?

A tooth-colored restoration means no more silver fillings discoloring smiles. The filling is natural-looking, compatible with tissue in the mouth, anti-abrasive and plaque-resistant. Dental practitioners no longer have to develop temporaries or take impressions and send them to a laboratory. Because of this, the standard 2nd visit has actually been eliminated. This new technology has over 10 years of medical research and documents to support it. The restorations have been proven accurate, safe and effective.

Today's Topic Has To Do With:

Tooth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of most clients, there are a number of methods to bleach teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth whitening system that will bleach teeth dramatically. Since tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is essential to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.

Most dentists use multiple approaches: custom made tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.

The tray method involves having impressions taken, which the lab makes into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of everyday use. 3 different strengths of gel might be used, however, the greater the strength, the higher the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is recommended for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take a number of months of use to see significant color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a really quick and practical lightening procedure. The appointment is approximately one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our patients love this treatment due to the fact that it is so simple and quick!

Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays should be used every couple of months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of external tooth layer.

  • Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
