Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of the majority of patients, there are a number of methods to bleach teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth whitening system that will lighten teeth dramatically. Because tooth bleaching only works on natural tooth enamel, it is essential to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Most dentists use a number of methods: custom made tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.
The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the lab fabricates into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of daily use. Three different strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the higher the strength, the higher the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is advised for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take multiple months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a very quick and convenient lightening process. The appointment is approximately one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our clients enjoy this treatment since it is so easy and fast!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays ought to be used every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
