Today's Topic Is:

Teeth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most clients, there are numerous methods to whiten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth lightening system that will lighten teeth significantly. Since tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the recently bleached teeth.

Most dentists use a number of techniques: customizeded tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.

The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory produces into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of daily use. 3 different strengths of gel may be used, however, the higher the strength, the greater the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is suggested for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take a number of months of use to see considerable color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a really fast and convenient lightening procedure. The visit is approximately one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our patients love this treatment because it is so simple and fast!

Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays ought to be used every couple of months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of external tooth layer.

  • Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
