Today's Subject Will Be:

Tooth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of the majority of clients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth whitening system that will whiten teeth significantly. Since tooth lightening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is necessary to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the newly bleached teeth.

Most dentists utilize multiple methods: custom made tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.

The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory produces into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of day-to-day use. 3 different strengths of gel might be used, however, the higher the strength, the higher the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is suggested for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take a number of months of use to see substantial color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a extremely fast and hassle-free bleaching procedure. The visit is around one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our patients like this treatment because it is so simple and quick!

Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays need to be used every few months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.

  • Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
