Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of a lot of patients, there are numerous methods to lighten teeth. The most popular method is using a home tooth whitening system that will bleach teeth significantly. Since tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is necessary to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the recently bleached teeth.
Most dentists use multiple techniques: custom made tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory fabricates into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole procedure takes about a week of daily use. 3 different strengths of gel might be used, however, the greater the strength, the greater the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is suggested for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take multiple months of use to see substantial color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a really quick and hassle-free lightening procedure. The appointment is around one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients like this treatment due to the fact that it is so simple and fast!
Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up might be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays need to be utilized every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
