What Are Same Day Crowns?

Same day crowns are a brand-new innovation that a dental practitioner can economically bring back damaged teeth in a single visit using a top quality ceramic material that matches the natural color of other teeth.

How Does It Work?

Same day crowns use a CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) innovation, incorporating a camera, computer and a milling device in one instrument. The dentist uses a special camera to take an accurate image of the damaged tooth. This optical impression is transferred and shown on a color computer screen, where the dental practitioner uses CAD technology to design the restoration. Then CAM takes over and instantly develops the restoration while the client waits. Finally, the dentist bonds the new restoration to the surface of the old tooth. The whole process takes about one hour.

What Does This Technology Mean For A Patient?

A tooth-colored restoration means no more silver fillings discoloring smiles. The filling is natural-looking, suitable with tissue in the mouth, anti-abrasive and plaque-resistant. Dentists no longer need to create temporaries or take impressions and send them to a lab. Because of this, the standard second appointment has actually been eliminated. This new innovation has over 10 years of scientific research and documentation to support it. The restorations have been proven accurate, safe and effective.

Today's Topic Is:

Fillings

Fillings are done to eliminate decay, and replace the afflicted tooth structure. It is called a filling because new material fills the hole that the decay left. Now days most teeth are treated with bonded tooth colored composite resin fillings. Caught early enough, cavities can be treated easily and painlessly. If not treated, decay can result in tooth pain and/or infection, and the tooth would require a root canal treatment or extraction.

There are two types of fillings; amalgam or silver fillings, and composite or white fillings. Composite fillings are tooth-colored to blend in with the remaining natural part of the tooth. Most dentists offer both types of fillings, but find that a lot of their clients like the composite fillings.

The term composite refers to the actual filling material which is a mix of glass or quartz filler in a resin medium.

Composite fillings provide great sturdiness and resistance to fracture in small-to-mid size restorations that have to hold up against moderate chewing pressure. Less tooth structure is removed when the dental practitioner prepares the tooth, and this might lead to a smaller filling than with of an amalgam.

In addition, composites are "bonded", or adhesively connected, to the tooth, typically enabling a more conservative repair for the tooth. Composite fillings require that the tooth be kept clean and dry during the entire filling process and they are subject to stain and discoloration in time. The life span of a white filling can depend greatly on where it is in your mouth and how heavily your teeth come together when you bite.

Composite filling material is also typically utilized to fix front teeth that have actually cracked or worn. Where possible, esthetic bonding of composite material to front teeth is typically much cheaper than veneers or crowns. However, bonding normally does not last as long as veneers or crowns.
