Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of many clients, there are numerous methods to lighten teeth. The most popular method is using a home tooth bleaching system that will bleach teeth significantly. Since tooth whitening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is essential to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the recently bleached teeth.
Most dentists use numerous techniques: customizeded tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the lab fabricates into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole procedure takes about a week of daily use. Three different strengths of gel might be utilized, however, the higher the strength, the greater the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is recommended for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take multiple months of use to see significant color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a really fast and practical whitening procedure. The visit is approximately one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients like this treatment since it is so easy and fast!
Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays need to be used every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
